The LS-6.1 is designed as a set: satellites for clarity, a buried subwoofer for weight, wired so a single stereo amplifier can run the lot.

    Sound that surrounds the whole yard

    Six LS-400 satellites sit through the garden beds, spaced about 1.5 to 1.8 metres apart. Each one carries clear vocals and detail at a comfortable level, so nobody at the table is shouting and nobody by the pool is straining to hear.

    Bass you feel but never see

    The LS-80 hides an 8-inch long-throw woofer in a ported, part-buried enclosure. Only the low domed cap shows above the mulch, and the bass fills out the whole entertaining area instead of pounding one corner.

    Made to stay out in the weather

    The satellites are rated IP56 and the subwoofer IP54: sealed against dust and dirt, and built to keep playing through rain, sprinklers and hose spray. They are made to live outside all year, not to be packed away.

    One stereo amp drives the lot

    Each LS-400 is a 32 ohm design, so three satellites and one of the subwoofer’s two voice coils share each amplifier channel at about 4.6 ohms. A 100 W stereo amp such as the Denon Home Amp runs the entire system.

LS-6.1 Garden System: questions we get asked

What amplifier does the LS-6.1 need?

A stereo amplifier of about 100 W per channel. Each channel runs three LS-400 satellites plus one of the LS-80’s two voice coils, which works out to roughly 4.6 ohms. The Denon Home Amp (100 W per channel, rated for 4 to 16 ohm speakers) is the pairing Definitive Technology itself suggests.

How far apart should the satellites go?

The manufacturer recommends about 1.5 to 1.8 metres between LS-400 speakers. Place them around the areas where people sit and gather, and aim each head towards the listening area.

Is the subwoofer really buried?

Yes. The LS-80 is 665 mm tall and sits about two-thirds in the ground: roughly 390 mm below grade with 275 mm, mostly the domed cap, showing above the mulch.

What cable do I run?

Direct-burial four-conductor speaker wire. The LS-400 manual gives 16 AWG for runs up to about 45 m and 14 AWG up to about 80 m. Silicone-filled wire nuts are supplied for the connections at each speaker.

Can I add more speakers later?

Yes. With the LS-80 in the system you can run up to four LS-400 satellites per amplifier channel, eight in total, so the LS-6.1 has room for two more.
